PhD position in Metamorphic Petrology and Structural Geology: Stability of jadeite in subducted continental crust
Charles University, Faculty of Science
Prague, Czechia
Deadline: Apr 15, 2026
Details
Job description
The project objectives:
Finding of jadeite in deeply subducted felsic continental crust is extremely rare despite its stability is predicted by experiments and thermodynamic modelling. This paradox can have an important impact on understanding the dynamics of subduction process since the albite-to-jadeite transformation may considerably increase the density of the continental crust if present in substantial quantity.
The aim of this Ph.D. project is the investigation of jadeite stability in felsic rocks and involves various approaches to reach the goal:
- It will include investigation of felsic rocks from various UHP terrains (Erzgebirge, Alps) where clinopyroxene was observed including detailed petrology and thermodynamic modelling.
- The observations from natural samples will be combined with deformation experiments at HP conditions conducted as part of the project and the role of various factors including deformation and fluid availability will be evaluated.
- The results will help to understand the behaviour of the deeply subducted felsic crust – its subduction, residence time, and exhumation affecting the dynamic of convergent systems.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for motivated and independent candidates with MSc degree in the broad field of geosciences. The degree must be obtained before starting the job, i.e. applications can be submitted even if the degree has not yet been obtained. The candidate should demonstrate an experience with metamorphic petrology and/or structural geology.
The Ph.D. position is covered by a fixed scholarship c. 1100,- EUR/month
